Quiksilver Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks
Today was the Finals Day for the Quiksilver Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast. Australians took out both the men's and women's events but two Californians came awfully close. The competition drew an audience of thousands, and we were lucky enough to enjoy the event from the competitors' area.
The World Surf League (WSL) hosts 11 World Championship Tour (WCT) competitions per calendar year for the sport's 34 elite. Snapper Rocks is stop no. 1 for 2016! One of Shaun's closest friends from home, Nat Young (below), competes on the World Championship Tour, which is why we made the detour to Coolangatta before taking off to New Zealand.
The fans go crazy at these events, especially for world champs Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. After their heats, dozens (if not hundreds?) of people swarm both men for autographs, selfies, photos, or even just to get a clear glimpse of them. It's amazing to watch how graceful both champs are, taking the time and patience to answer questions, sign autographs, etc. - while some not so grateful fans yell their name, demanding their f'ing selfie.
The first few days of the contest were perfect beach days with temperatures over 85 F (above). The Finals Day (below), unfortunately, had a storm carry through all day with off & on rain. A light sprinkle will not scare these fans away, though - many sticking around all the way for the trophy ceremony.
